Trend Watch - Leather over Lace

Marie Claire shows off the leather over lace look in the Splurge vs. Steal section of their October 2010 issue. NV Boutique shows this trend in the News Journal's "Top 10 Fall styles". (see picture in next post)

Top 10 looks for fall style - News Journal Press

BY ERICA COHEN • The News Journal • October 11, 2010
Military-style cargo pants and neutral-toned jackets, like these from NV Boutique in Newark, are hot styles for fall. They're also easy to mix and match. (The News Journal/ROBERT CRAIG)
Stripes. Pearls. And anything military.

That doesn't sound a winning recipe for anything, but it's part of the menu for fall fashion, which is packed with bold new looks that bring back masculine-influenced styles and military-inspired pieces while adding new feminine accents like lace.
Earthy colors and inexpensive options make this seasons's trends adaptable and great for mixing and matching. Here's what four of our favorite shops -- NV Boutique in Newark, Peter Kate in Greenville, Ellie Boutique and Downtown Cowgirl in Rehoboth Beach -- say are 10 looks to have for fall.

1. Military.
Whether it's cargo style pockets or brown and green masculine accents, military is back for another season. You can see it in Marc Jacobs' military-inspired jacket for $528 Saks Fifth Avenue, or score the look for $60 at Target with the Merona long wool coat in military green.

2. Ankle booties.
While last year boasted suede classics in a variety of colors, this year's boot takes a masculine turn with fall colors and lace- up fronts. Snag Urban Outfitters' burgundy Suede Hiker Boots for $168 or go with a more classic wedge boot from Nine West with their Radcliff Boots for $99.
The size selection begins to drop in October, says Erin Kesselring of Downtown Cowgirl, but prices won't go down until January shop now for the best choices.

3. Jeggings.
Last season's denim leggings are back with a vengeance in shades from dark blues to grays. American Eagle carries these for $39.50 in Midnight Indigo, Dark Destroyed and others -- saving money you might have spent on a more expensive pair like J Brand's ink stretch straight leg jeans. Jeans and jeggings normally go on sale in October after the back- to- school rush is over, so stock up this month.
"We're seeing a lot of them because the ankle boots go over them so nicely," says Erin Reynolds of NV Boutique.

4. Cross-body bags.
An architectural version of the classic messenger, these bags are everywhere this season, ranging from gunmetal grays to beiges and tans. For a chic bargain go with Forever 21's $24 envelope bag, but you can find them in every price range and nearly every textile.

"Make sure to think about what size you want your bag to be and what you need to fit on a daily basis," says Amanda Calabro of Peter Kate. This will help you avoid buying a bag that doesn't meet your needs.

5. Camel.
Hitting fall's neutral theme, this color is everywhere from purses to watches to coats. You can find a Michael Kors double-breasted camel overcoat costs around $250 but Jones New York does it for only $55.

6. Faux fur.
The real thing definitely isn't in, but imitation looks and feels luxe, even when it seems to come back in style every five years or so.
"It's popular and prevalent and very soft to the hand, very luxe looking and rich," says Donna Schneider of Ellie Boutique. You'll find faux fur in everything from short-cropped fur jackets to faux shawls. Juicy Couture does a faux-fur hooded vest for $278, while Old Navy does a similar vest for $29.50.

7. Stripes.
"Stripes will stick around till spring," says NV Boutique's Reynolds. They're found in dresses and tops for all kinds of events, from casual to dressy.

8. Lace.
This feminine accent is back for the season, especially in accents such as lace backs to shirts and lacy details in general, says Reynolds.

9. Leather.
Last season, leather showed up in the classic silhouette of a bomber jacket. This season, it returns in shrunken blazers, motorcycle jackets and even trenches. Kohl's has a faux- leather motorcycle jacket in their Simply Vera Wang collection for only $53 while the real deal can cost around $500 from Ralph Lauren, or $1,100 from Phillip Lim.
Donna Schneider from Ellie Boutique insists this season's new jackets have more life than the matte black leather from last year.
"Gun-metal gray has a little more life than a flat black leather," she says. So take off and explore your options.

10. Pearls.
This season the elegant classic gets a rocker twist when different-colored pearls are layered with metal chains to add edge to the go-to accessory. Buy fakes from Claire's for around $10 or mix your own pearls with the Jaclyn Smith Mixed Metal chains from Kmart for $14.
